The sourced equipment list
Start with what the veterinary and welfare literature actually requires: Minimum specialist equipment documented across sources: vivarium (120 cm+ for adults), 60-100 W basking bulb or reptile flood lamp with thermostat, high-output 10-12% UVB tube, ceramic night heater (if needed), two thermometers, hygrometer, UV Index meter, hides, basking furniture and substrate.
Everything below expands that into a shopping list you can work through, with the reason each item exists.
Enclosure
A correctly sized enclosure. 40 gallons at minimum, with 60 to 100 gallons widely recommended In metric: at least 120 cm long by 60 cm wide by 60 cm high
The governing rule: Enclosure length should be at least 3x the lizard's total body length; VCA adds minimum width of 16 inches.
Buy for the adult animal rather than the hatchling. It is cheaper than buying twice, and our setup cost guide has real prices from retailer listings.
Consider the material. Bearded dragons do better in larger wooden or fiberglass vivaria rather than glass aquaria.
Check ventilation. Good ventilation is essential for air circulation, temperature control and humidity management.
A secure lid or doors. Dragons climb better than their build suggests: Young bearded dragons are semi-arboreal; adults are mostly terrestrial but remain excellent climbers and perch on elevated sites to bask.
Lighting
A UVB tube and matching fixture. This is the single most important purchase after the enclosure: Bearded dragons rely on UVB light to synthesize vitamin D3 in the skin; D3 is essential for calcium metabolism, and without adequate UVB they can develop metabolic bone disease (nutritional secondary hyperparathyroidism), weak bones and fractures.
The specification: RSPCA UK recommends a high-output 10-12% UVB fluorescent tube spanning up to one half of the vivarium length, fixed into the roof toward the hot end.
Nothing between bulb and dragon. No glass or plastic (or fine mesh) may sit between the UVB source and the dragon - these filter out UVB; sunlight through a window is not sufficient. That rules out mounting a tube above a glass lid.
Correct mounting distance. VCA: UVB bulb within 6-18 inches of the pet; WSU: position bulb 30-45 cm above the basking area; Merck: fluorescent UVB strips must be within about 30 cm (12 in)
A timer. Lighting should run on a consistent schedule (timer-controlled day-night cycle) The cycle: Provide a regular day-night light cycle: RSPCA UK and RSPCA SA recommend 12 hours light / 12 hours dark; NCSU: 12-14 hours light in spring/summer and 8 hours in fall/winter; PetMD: 10-12 hours UVB daily; Merck: 12 hours/day suitable for general maintenance.
Replacement bulbs, budgeted from the start. Replace UVB bulbs on schedule even if still emitting visible light: every 6 months (NCSU, VCA, PetMD); WSU: every 6-8 months for juveniles, yearly for adults; Merck: fluorescent every 9-12 months; RSPCA SA: effective UVB lifespan typically 6-12 months - follow manufacturer guidance.
Heating
A basking lamp and fixture. Heat the basking zone with a 60-100 W reflector bulb (RSPCA UK) or reptile-specific flood/spot lamp on a thermostat (RSPCA SA); ceramic (non-light-emitting) heaters maintain night temperature.
A thermostat. Not on the sourced minimum list, and we recommend one anyway. It is the protection against a stuck-on lamp, and burns are a documented risk: Basking lamp must not be positioned too close to the lizard (RSPCA UK: back no closer than 25-30 cm from the lamp); basking area should be as large as the dragon so the whole body heats evenly; guard lamps to prevent burns.
A night heat source, if your room needs one. Nights should not fall below no colder than 65 to 70 F (18 to 21 C). A ceramic emitter provides heat without light, which matters because the light cycle should stay intact.
Monitoring equipment
Two thermometers. Use two thermometers, one at the cool end and one at the warm end near the heat source.
Targets: basking 95 to 110 F (35 to 43 C), cool end 75 to 80 F (24 to 27 C)
Digital probes or an infrared thermometer beat the stick-on dial types that come bundled with many kits.
A hygrometer. Measure humidity with a hygrometer (RSPCA UK: place at the cool end) Target: 30 to 40 percent
A kitchen scale. Not sold as reptile equipment and genuinely useful. Weekly weights catch problems before behaviour changes, which the care routine guide builds into the schedule.
Substrate and furniture
Substrate. Safe options: Safe substrates: newspaper, butcher paper or other recycled paper products, paper towels, and reptile carpet (artificial turf)
And tile: RSPCA UK lists slate tiles among acceptable floor coverings, alongside reptile-safe sand or a sand/soil mixture.
Avoid the banned list entirely: Avoid substrates linked to gut impaction or toxicity: sand including calcium-based 'calci-sand' (VCA, NCSU, RSPCA SA), gravel/pea gravel, wood chips/shavings, corn cob, crushed walnut shells, cat litter, and cedar (toxic) or pine shavings.
Sources differ on loose substrate, which the substrate guide covers honestly: Sources differ on loose substrate: US veterinary sources (VCA, NCSU) advise against all sand due to impaction risk, while RSPCA UK permits reptile-safe sand or sand/soil mix with a digging box, and RSPCA SA lists sand as an option but excludes calci-sand; all sources agree calci-sand, gravel, corn cob and walnut shell are unsafe.
Basking furniture. Provide sturdy basking furniture: large climbable rocks and secured low branches; RSPCA SA calls thick branches, rocks, hollows, basking sites and climbing facilities 'essential to minimise stress and provide choice for self-regulation and environmental enrichment'.
Two hides. Provide hiding places at BOTH the warm and cool ends of the enclosure; hides can be commercial caves, clay pots or cardboard boxes.
A water dish. Provide fresh water in a shallow, non-tip dish; NCSU also recommends a weekly shallow warm-water soak.
A food dish. Offer food in a separate dish or feeding container rather than on the substrate to reduce accidental substrate ingestion.
Optional: a digging box. RSPCA UK recommends a digging box with a sand/soil mixture in the cool end.
Optional: live plants. Hardy live non-toxic plants can be included (NCSU suggests sansevieria, aloe, palms, cycads); artificial plants also work for cover.
Food and supplements
Feeder insects. Commonly recommended feeder insects: commercial crickets, dubia roaches, black soldier fly larvae, hornworms, silkworms, mealworms, superworms, and waxworms.
A gut-load diet for the insects. Feeder insects should be gut-loaded (fed a high-calcium, nutrient-fortified diet) before feeding: NCSU recommends 24-72 hours prior; PetMD says 6-12 hours before; Merck describes a 3-day gut-load with a 12% calcium (calcium carbonate) diet.
Calcium powder. Juveniles 4 to 5 times a week; adults 1 to 2 times a week
A reptile multivitamin. Dust feeder insects with a reptile multivitamin powder 1-2 times per week (PetMD diet guide) or once weekly (PetMD care sheet); RSPCA applies multivitamin powder to vegetables every two weeks.
Greens from the supermarket. Calcium-rich staple greens include collard greens, mustard greens, turnip greens, and dandelion greens.
Storage for feeders. A ventilated tub, plus whatever the species you choose needs. The feeder guide covers the options.
Cleaning supplies
Basic cleaning materials. Safe cleaning: soap and water is generally sufficient; bleach may be used if rinsed thoroughly; avoid phenolic disinfectants (toxic to reptiles); RSPCA SA recommends diluted F10 disinfectant at a 1:250 ratio with water for cage items.
Dedicated cloths and tools that never go near food preparation areas: CDC: keep reptiles out of areas where food or drink is prepared, served, or stored (kitchens, outdoor patios); do not bathe reptiles in kitchen or bathroom sinks - use a tub or bin dedicated to reptile use only; clean reptile equipment outside the house and disinfect any surfaces reptiles contact.
Paper towels for daily spot-cleaning: Spot-clean waste daily (or immediately when seen); remove uneaten insects from the enclosure.

The order to buy in
- Enclosure, lighting, heating, and monitoring first
- Substrate and furniture
- Run everything for several days and verify both temperatures hold
- Buy feeders and greens
- Bring the dragon home
- Book the veterinary check: A reptile-experienced veterinarian should examine a new bearded dragon within 48 hours of purchase (physical exam, weight, oral cavity, skeletal evaluation, fecal parasite test)
That sequence matters. A dragon arriving before the enclosure is stable spends its first days in conditions nobody has verified, which is a poor start for an animal already stressed by moving home.
