What bearded dragons hunt in the wild
Wild central bearded dragons are opportunistic omnivores that eat large quantities of plant matter, insects, and the occasional small rodent or lizard; they are not finicky eaters. In the wild they feed on vegetation including fruit and leaves, invertebrates (including ants and beetles), and small vertebrates such as lizards.
The captive feeder list exists to replace that variety safely: farmed insects with known diets, no parasite load, and no pesticide exposure. Every ranking below is really a measure of how well a feeder does that replacement job.
The staple feeders
Two insects carry most captive bearded dragon diets. Crickets are rated a safe staple across VCA, NC State, PetMD, and RSPCA guidance. Dubia roaches earn the same safe staple rating: VCA lists them among appropriate protein sources and PetMD includes them in its recommended gut-loaded feeders.
The full veterinary roster is wider. Commonly recommended feeder insects: commercial crickets, dubia roaches, black soldier fly larvae, hornworms, silkworms, mealworms, superworms, and waxworms. The rest of the feeder aisle is fine in rotation but wrong as a foundation.

RSPCA Australia flags the reason the worms stay occasional: Some feeder insects, such as mealworms, can be high in fat., and an enclosure lizard has nowhere to spend those calories. The mealworm guide and superworm guide cover age limits for each.
One non-insect item belongs in this section because vets group it with feeders. Pinky mice may be offered sparingly as an option for dragons approaching adulthood, but only one mouse should be given each week; VCA also lists pinkie/fuzzy mice to be fed sparingly.
Match the insect to your dragon's age
A feeder that is perfect for an adult can injure a hatchling. Dragons under 1 month old: flightless fruit flies, gut-loaded pinhead crickets, and mashed vegetables, fed 2-3 times daily.
Volume peaks in the juvenile months, when insects still lead the diet. Live insects should make up about 70% of a juvenile bearded dragon's diet, with vegetables about 20-30% and only small amounts of fruit.
Size is the hard rule at every age. Never feed an insect whose length is greater/wider than the width of the dragon's head; RSPCA: live food greater than the width of the dragon's head should not be offered. PetMD phrases the same limit a second way: Feeder insects should never be larger than the space between the bearded dragon's eyes. The rule exists because the consequences are serious. Small prey must be fed to baby bearded dragons to avoid health problems such as impaction; start with pinhead crickets and tiny, freshly molted worms and move gradually to larger sizes.
From four months onward the menu widens. From 4 months to adulthood, feed once daily; NCSU lists crickets, super/mealworms, pinky mice, and salad every other day for this stage. Adulthood then trims the insect share right back down. PetMD adult schedule: a daily salad of 70-80% greens, 20-30% vegetables and 2-5% fruit, with gut-loaded live insects offered 3-4 times per week.
Gut loading and dusting: what makes a feeder nutritious
A feeder insect is a delivery vehicle, and it delivers what it ate. Feeder insects should be gut-loaded (fed a high-calcium, nutrient-fortified diet) before feeding: NCSU recommends 24-72 hours prior; PetMD says 6-12 hours before; Merck describes a 3-day gut-load with a 12% calcium (calcium carbonate) diet.
The reason the step is non-negotiable comes down to calcium. Most feeder insects are low in calcium; without supplementation (gut loading, dusting) and adequate UVB, dragons are at risk for metabolic bone disease. RSPCA Australia adds a second deficiency to the list: Feeder insects are low in calcium and vitamin A; feeder invertebrates are best fed a formulated diet fortified with calcium and vitamin A ('gut loading')
The clock matters once the insects are loaded. Gut-loaded feeder insects need to be eaten by the lizard within an hour of the insects being fed (gut-loaded) Dust with calcium powder at the feeding itself, 4 to 5 times a week for growing dragons and 1 to 2 times a week for adults; the full schedule is in the calcium and supplement guide.
A practical week runs one staple as the base with a second feeder for variety, all inside the age-appropriate frequency covered above.
Insects you must never feed
Two rules here are absolute, and both are backed by multiple tier-one veterinary sources.
Fireflies kill bearded dragons. never — lethal
The ban covers insects that wander into the enclosure on their own, too. Remove them; a dragon treats anything moving at tongue height as food, and it has no way to screen for toxins.
Wild-caught insects of any species are also off the table. never The hornworm rating above says captive-bred only for the same reason. According to the University of Illinois College of Veterinary Medicine, Wild hornworms are toxic to reptiles because they feed on tomato and tobacco plants and accumulate those toxins; only commercially raised hornworms are safe to feed.. The nutrition numbers inside a feeder insect
Experienced keepers should know the actual figures, because they explain every rule above.
Merck's veterinary nutrition data shows how poor an unprepared insect really is. Feeder insects naturally contain extremely low calcium (about 0.03-0.3%) with 0.8-0.9% phosphorus; a 3-day 12% calcium gut-load raises insect calcium to roughly 0.8-0.9%, giving a Ca:P ratio of approximately 1.2:1. Read that again: even a properly executed three-day gut load only brings an insect up to roughly balanced, not calcium-rich. That is why dusting sits on top of gut loading rather than replacing it, and why NC State warns that a light calcium coating Lightly coating insects with calcium powder (shaking in a bag) can supplement calcium but 'is not a substitute for appropriate gut loading'..
The target both techniques serve is the whole-diet ratio of 2:1 calcium to phosphorus. Feeder insects start far below it. Greens, gut loading, and dusting together are what close the gap, which is why an insect-heavy diet with no supplementation program fails even when every individual feeder on the menu is an approved species.
