Bearded Dragon Tank Setup: The Step by Step Guide

A bearded dragon tank setup stands on five systems working together: an enclosure at least 120 cm long by 60 cm wide by 60 cm high, a basking zone of 95 to 110 F (35 to 43 C) fading to a cool end of 75 to 80 F (24 to 27 C), a UVB tube running 12 hours of light a day, humidity held at 30 to 40 percent, and a floor the dragon cannot swallow. A working bearded dragon tank is a stack of systems, not a glass box with a lamp. Minimum specialist equipment documented across sources: vivarium (120 cm+ for adults), 60-100 W basking bulb or reptile flood lamp with thermostat, high-output 10-12% UVB tube, ceramic night heater (if needed), two thermometers, hygrometer, UV Index meter, hides, basking furniture and substrate. Buy all of it before the dragon arrives, because the setup needs a test run before it holds stable numbers on its own.

Ventilation belongs on that list even though it never appears on a receipt. Good ventilation is essential for air circulation, temperature control and humidity management. A sealed aquarium with a screen lid moves air differently from a wooden vivarium with vents, and your heating plan changes with it.

Step 1: choose the enclosure

Size comes first. Vivarium at least 120 cm long x 60 cm high x 60 cm wide for one adult (RSPCA UK); RSPCA South Australia: no less than 1.2-1.8 m long and 0.6-0.9 m high, larger is ideal. American keepers usually shop by gallons instead: Adults: 40 gallons or larger (PetMD); 60-100 gallon tank or larger recommended (VCA)

A quick check works for any enclosure you are considering. Enclosure length should be at least 3x the lizard's total body length; VCA adds minimum width of 16 inches. Since adults reach 45 to 60 cm (about 18 to 24 inches), that rule lands you right back at the RSPCA minimum. Juveniles can start in a minimum 20-gallon enclosure and need upgrading as they grow. Material matters more than most beginners expect. According to the Merck Veterinary Manual, Bearded dragons do better in larger wooden or fiberglass vivaria rather than glass aquaria. Wood and fiberglass hold heat better than bare glass and keep three sides visually closed, which reduces stress for a prey-wary lizard.

Step 2: build the temperature gradient

Heat is the engine of the whole setup. A hot-to-cool temperature gradient is mandatory so the dragon can thermoregulate within its preferred optimal temperature zone (POTZ)

Heat the basking zone with a 60-100 W reflector bulb (RSPCA UK) or reptile-specific flood/spot lamp on a thermostat (RSPCA SA); ceramic (non-light-emitting) heaters maintain night temperature. Mount the basking lamp at one end only, never the middle, so the far end can stay cool. Use two thermometers, one at the cool end and one at the warm end near the heat source. Step 3: install the UVB system

Skip this step and nothing else in the setup can save your dragon. Bearded dragons rely on UVB light to synthesize vitamin D3 in the skin; D3 is essential for calcium metabolism, and without adequate UVB they can develop metabolic bone disease (nutritional secondary hyperparathyroidism), weak bones and fractures.

RSPCA UK recommends a high-output 10-12% UVB fluorescent tube spanning up to one half of the vivarium length, fixed into the roof toward the hot end. VCA: UVB bulb within 6-18 inches of the pet; WSU: position bulb 30-45 cm above the basking area; Merck: fluorescent UVB strips must be within about 30 cm (12 in) Placement decides everything: No glass or plastic (or fine mesh) may sit between the UVB source and the dragon - these filter out UVB; sunlight through a window is not sufficient.

Set the schedule once and automate it. Provide a regular day-night light cycle: RSPCA UK and RSPCA SA recommend 12 hours light / 12 hours dark; NCSU: 12-14 hours light in spring/summer and 8 hours in fall/winter; PetMD: 10-12 hours UVB daily; Merck: 12 hours/day suitable for general maintenance. Lighting should run on a consistent schedule (timer-controlled day-night cycle) Put a bulb replacement date in your phone as well, because UVB output fades invisibly: replace every 6 to 12 months. Step 4: lay the substrate

The floor is a health decision, not a style decision. Safe substrates: newspaper, butcher paper or other recycled paper products, paper towels, and reptile carpet (artificial turf) RSPCA UK lists slate tiles among acceptable floor coverings, alongside reptile-safe sand or a sand/soil mixture.

The avoid list is longer and firmer. Avoid substrates linked to gut impaction or toxicity: sand including calcium-based 'calci-sand' (VCA, NCSU, RSPCA SA), gravel/pea gravel, wood chips/shavings, corn cob, crushed walnut shells, cat litter, and cedar (toxic) or pine shavings.

Step 5: furnish for behavior, not looks

Every item in the tank should serve a behavior the species performs in the wild. Provide sturdy basking furniture: large climbable rocks and secured low branches; RSPCA SA calls thick branches, rocks, hollows, basking sites and climbing facilities 'essential to minimise stress and provide choice for self-regulation and environmental enrichment'.

Hides are not optional decoration. Provide hiding places at BOTH the warm and cool ends of the enclosure; hides can be commercial caves, clay pots or cardboard boxes. Add greenery for cover: Hardy live non-toxic plants can be included (NCSU suggests sansevieria, aloe, palms, cycads); artificial plants also work for cover.

Water stays simple. Provide a shallow dish of fresh water the dragon can step into, changed/cleaned daily; fresh clean water should always be available. Step 6: position the tank and test run it

Room placement affects the thermal stability you just paid for. Position the vivarium away from other heat sources such as radiators or bright windows that could affect enclosure temperature.

Now run the empty setup before the dragon moves in. Check both thermometers morning and evening until the readings hold steady, confirm the basking spot peaks inside 95 to 110 F (35 to 43 C), and watch the hygrometer. Keep humidity low, around 30-40%; source ranges: RSPCA UK 30-40% (measured at cool end), WSU 30-40%, NCSU 20-40%, PetMD 30-50%, Merck 20-30%. The setup details experienced keepers check

Three specifics separate an adequate build from a good one.

Lamp clearance. Basking lamp must not be positioned too close to the lizard (RSPCA UK: back no closer than 25-30 cm from the lamp); basking area should be as large as the dragon so the whole body heats evenly; guard lamps to prevent burns. A basking dragon senses warmth poorly at skin level, so it will not move away from a lamp that is slowly burning it. Measure the gap; do not eyeball it.

UV Index verification. Wattage and box labels tell you little about delivered UVB at dragon height. UV Index gradient should range from 3.0-5.0 in the basking zone down to zero in the shade; check output regularly with a UV Index meter. A UVI meter costs less than a single exotic vet visit and turns your lighting from guesswork into measurement.

The stakes if you shortcut. Most common bearded dragon health problems are husbandry-linked: metabolic bone disease, impaction, dysecdysis (abnormal shedding), parasites, gout, fatty liver and trauma appear on RSPCA SA's list of common conditions; incorrect diet, lighting and temperature are root causes cited by vet sources. Is a 40 gallon tank big enough for a bearded dragon?
