The verdict
Blueberries are safe as an occasional treat and appear directly in veterinary feeding guidance: Safe occasional fruits include papaya, melon, watermelon, banana, figs, apples, mango, dates, peaches, apricots (NCSU), strawberries and blueberries (PetMD), and apple, apricot, banana, dates, figs, grapes, guava, kiwi, mango, melon, peach, pear, raspberry, star fruit, strawberry, tomato (VCA)
They are also the single most convenient fruit to serve. No peel, no core, no seeds to pick out, and they arrive pre-cut by nature. That convenience is where the trouble starts.
How many is actually too many
A blueberry looks like nothing. Ten blueberries still look like nothing. This is the fruit where portion discipline collapses quietly, because nobody feels generous handing over three berries.
The governing limit is a share of the diet, not a count: Fruit should be limited to at most about 5% of the total diet (NCSU/WSU/PetMD) because it is high in sugar; VCA allows fruit as 10-20% of the plant portion only, 'as a treat only'.
For an adult bearded dragon, two or three blueberries mixed into a salad, once a week, sits comfortably inside that. A small handful does not. Ten berries offered twice a week is a fruit-forward diet dressed up as a treat.
A useful mental check: look at the salad before it goes in and ask what share of the bowl is fruit by volume. If fruit is visible as a feature rather than a scattering, it is too much.
Preparation, minimal but not zero
Wash them. Berries are eaten whole with the skin on and hold surface residue.
Halve for smaller dragons. A whole blueberry is round and slick. For juveniles and smaller adults, cut them in half so the shape cannot work against you. The rule veterinary sources apply to prey items transfers directly: Never feed an insect whose length is greater/wider than the width of the dragon's head; RSPCA: live food greater than the width of the dragon's head should not be offered.
Serve in a dish. Offer food in a separate dish or feeding container rather than on the substrate to reduce accidental substrate ingestion. Berries roll, and a berry that rolls into loose substrate picks up whatever it lands in.
Clear leftovers the same day. Crushed berries stain, ferment, and add moisture to an enclosure that should hold 30 to 40 percent.
The antioxidant question, answered honestly
Blueberries carry a reputation as a superfood, and owners reasonably ask if that reputation transfers to reptiles.
Here is the honest position: none of the veterinary sources we cite makes any health claim for blueberries in bearded dragons. They appear on the safe-fruit list, and that is the extent of what the evidence supports. Human nutrition research on antioxidants does not automatically apply to a desert lizard with completely different physiology and dietary needs.
So feed blueberries because your dragon enjoys them and they are safe in small amounts. Do not feed them believing they are doing therapeutic work, and certainly do not increase the portion on that reasoning.
What the diet genuinely needs is documented, and it is not antioxidants: 80-90% of the plant material fed should be leafy green vegetables; fruit plus yellow/red/orange vegetables should be only 10-20% of the plant portion.

The cold point deserves a sentence of its own, because it is underappreciated. Bearded dragons digest using external heat, which is why the basking zone sits at 95 to 110 F (35 to 43 C). Food served cold from the fridge lands in a gut that has not been brought up to operating temperature. Room temperature, always.
Where fruit sits in the mineral picture
The reason every fruit page on this site ends up talking about calcium is that calcium is the constraint the whole diet works within.
The calcium:phosphorus ratio of the diet should be at least 1:1, with 2:1 preferred (Merck); WSU and Illinois WEL state the ideal Ca:P ratio is 2:1.
Staple greens are how that target gets met: Calcium-rich staple greens include collard greens, mustard greens, turnip greens, and dandelion greens.
The insect half of the diet works against it hard: Feeder insects naturally contain extremely low calcium (about 0.03-0.3%) with 0.8-0.9% phosphorus; a 3-day 12% calcium gut-load raises insect calcium to roughly 0.8-0.9%, giving a Ca:P ratio of approximately 1.2:1.
Blueberries contribute effectively nothing toward the calcium side, so their entire cost to the diet is displacement. Three berries displace almost nothing. A handful displaces a meaningful share of a salad that was supposed to be carrying minerals. Age matters more than the fruit does
Juveniles have different priorities than adults. Their intake is weighted toward growth: Live insects should make up about 70% of a juvenile bearded dragon's diet, with vegetables about 20-30% and only small amounts of fruit.
At that stage the plant portion is small and every bit of it should be earning its place. Fruit does not. Save blueberries for adulthood, and use the feeding schedule guide to get the age-appropriate structure right.
What to watch afterward
Blueberry skins sometimes pass visibly in droppings, which is normal and not a cause for concern. Persistently loose stool is a different signal, and the droppings guide explains the baseline to measure against.
Appetite is the other thing to track. A dragon that starts refusing greens while accepting berries has learned something you did not intend to teach. If refusal comes with weight loss or lethargy, the cause is likely not the menu: Contact a veterinarian if a bearded dragon is lethargic, isn't eating well, or isn't growing normally (WSU); RSPCA advises watching weight and contacting a vet if a dragon loses weight during seasonal slowdown.
