A staple, not a treat
Dubia roaches are one of the small number of feeders that veterinary sources treat as a foundation rather than an extra: Commonly recommended feeder insects: commercial crickets, dubia roaches, black soldier fly larvae, hornworms, silkworms, mealworms, superworms, and waxworms.

Why keepers switch from crickets
The nutritional case for dubia over crickets is often overstated online, and we are not going to invent numbers to support it. What is genuinely different is the practical experience, and it matters more than most nutrition arguments.
They cannot climb smooth surfaces. A dubia roach in a smooth-sided dish stays there. A cricket does not.
They do not chirp. Anyone who has kept crickets in a bedroom understands the value of this.
They live longer in storage. Crickets die in numbers; dubia colonies are stable and low-maintenance.
They do not infest a house. Dubia require heat and humidity that a typical home does not provide, so escapees do not establish.
They are easy to size. Colonies produce a range of sizes at once, which makes matching feeder to dragon straightforward.

Size is the rule that governs safety
Every feeder question in this species comes back to prey size, and the guidance is specific: Never feed an insect whose length is greater/wider than the width of the dragon's head; RSPCA: live food greater than the width of the dragon's head should not be offered.
Or as stated elsewhere: no larger than the space between its eyes
The consequence of ignoring it is documented: Small prey must be fed to baby bearded dragons to avoid health problems such as impaction; start with pinhead crickets and tiny, freshly molted worms and move gradually to larger sizes.

Preparation: the part that turns them into good food
A dubia roach straight from the tub is poor nutrition. The same holds for every feeder insect, and the numbers are blunt: Feeder insects naturally contain extremely low calcium (about 0.03-0.3%) with 0.8-0.9% phosphorus; a 3-day 12% calcium gut-load raises insect calcium to roughly 0.8-0.9%, giving a Ca:P ratio of approximately 1.2:1.
Step one is gut loading: Feeder insects should be gut-loaded (fed a high-calcium, nutrient-fortified diet) before feeding: NCSU recommends 24-72 hours prior; PetMD says 6-12 hours before; Merck describes a 3-day gut-load with a 12% calcium (calcium carbonate) diet.
Step two is dusting: Lightly coating insects with calcium powder (shaking in a bag) can supplement calcium but 'is not a substitute for appropriate gut loading'.
Step three is timing, which is where good intentions commonly fail: Gut-loaded feeder insects need to be eaten by the lizard within an hour of the insects being fed (gut-loaded)
The target all of this serves: The calcium:phosphorus ratio of the diet should be at least 1:1, with 2:1 preferred (Merck); WSU and Illinois WEL state the ideal Ca:P ratio is 2:1.
Skip the routine and the outcome is well documented: Most feeder insects are low in calcium; without supplementation (gut loading, dusting) and adequate UVB, dragons are at risk for metabolic bone disease. How many, and how often
Frequency is an age question rather than a feeder question. Hatchlings eat constantly: Hatchlings (under 1-2 months) should be fed 2-3 times daily, primarily appropriately sized live insects (flightless fruit flies, gut-loaded pinhead crickets, mashed vegetables)
Juveniles slow down: Juveniles 1-4 months old should be fed twice daily (crickets, veggies, occasional super/mealworm)
And adults eat far fewer insects than most owners assume: Adult diet per NC State and WSU vet hospitals: 50-55% dark leafy greens, 20% chopped/grated vegetables, about 25% animal matter (insects), and a maximum of 5% fruit.
Sources differ on the adult proportion, and the range is worth knowing: Recommended adult insect share varies by source: RSPCA states 90% vegetable / 10% animal matter, PetMD states 20-30% insects with 70-80% vegetables, and NCSU/WSU state about 25% animal matter — all agree adults eat mostly plants.

Feeding practice
Offer roaches in a smooth-sided dish, which contains them and keeps feeders out of the substrate. That matters for a documented reason: Offer food in a separate dish or feeding container rather than on the substrate to reduce accidental substrate ingestion.
Supervise the feed, and clear anything left: Uneaten live insects left in the enclosure can seriously harm the dragon.
Some dragons take a session or two to recognise roaches as food after a life of crickets. Movement is the trigger; a roach sitting still in a dish is often ignored, while one that scuttles gets taken immediately.

Legal note worth checking
Dubia roaches are restricted in some jurisdictions, including certain US states, because of concerns about non-native species establishing. That is a local regulation question rather than a veterinary one, and the position varies. Check your own state or country rules before ordering a colony.
What to watch
A correctly sized, gut-loaded, dusted roach is about as safe as feeder insects get. The signs worth monitoring after any feed relate to digestion: Reduced or absent droppings with loss of appetite and lethargy warrant veterinary evaluation; decreased stool production typically indicates reduced food intake or constipation.
