That condition is the whole story of this page. Superworms are not a different food from mealworms in any dramatic sense. They are a considerably larger one, and larger is where the risk lives.
Size is the safety variable
Veterinary guidance on feeder size is specific and repeated across sources: Never feed an insect whose length is greater/wider than the width of the dragon's head; RSPCA: live food greater than the width of the dragon's head should not be offered.

A full-grown superworm can exceed both measures for a juvenile dragon. That is not a marginal concern: Small prey must be fed to baby bearded dragons to avoid health problems such as impaction; start with pinhead crickets and tiny, freshly molted worms and move gradually to larger sizes.
The practical test takes two seconds. Hold the worm next to your dragon's head. If it is longer than the head is wide, or thicker than the gap between the eyes, it does not go in. Our impaction guide covers what happens when that rule gets broken.
Why superworms suit adults well
For a full-grown dragon, the size that makes superworms unsuitable for babies becomes an advantage. They are substantial, they move enough to trigger interest, and a small number makes a satisfying feed for an animal that no longer eats insects daily.
Adult feeding is far lighter on insects than new owners expect: Adult diet per NC State and WSU vet hospitals: 50-55% dark leafy greens, 20% chopped/grated vegetables, about 25% animal matter (insects), and a maximum of 5% fruit.
And sources vary on exactly how light: Recommended adult insect share varies by source: RSPCA states 90% vegetable / 10% animal matter, PetMD states 20-30% insects with 70-80% vegetables, and NCSU/WSU state about 25% animal matter — all agree adults eat mostly plants.

The preparation every feeder needs
Superworms carry the same mineral problem as every other feeder insect: Feeder insects naturally contain extremely low calcium (about 0.03-0.3%) with 0.8-0.9% phosphorus; a 3-day 12% calcium gut-load raises insect calcium to roughly 0.8-0.9%, giving a Ca:P ratio of approximately 1.2:1.
Two steps close that gap. Gut loading first: Feeder insects should be gut-loaded (fed a high-calcium, nutrient-fortified diet) before feeding: NCSU recommends 24-72 hours prior; PetMD says 6-12 hours before; Merck describes a 3-day gut-load with a 12% calcium (calcium carbonate) diet.
Then dusting: Lightly coating insects with calcium powder (shaking in a bag) can supplement calcium but 'is not a substitute for appropriate gut loading'.
And the timing detail that decides if gut loading worked at all: Gut-loaded feeder insects need to be eaten by the lizard within an hour of the insects being fed (gut-loaded)
The standard being aimed at: The calcium:phosphorus ratio of the diet should be at least 1:1, with 2:1 preferred (Merck); WSU and Illinois WEL state the ideal Ca:P ratio is 2:1.

The bite question, and what our sources say
Superworms have noticeable mandibles, which generates a common worry about internal bites.
None of the veterinary sources we cite documents that happening in bearded dragons, so we are not going to present it as a known risk. Sensible practice holds regardless: offer superworms in a dish rather than loose in the enclosure, feed one or two at a time under supervision, and remove anything uneaten.
That last point is sourced and worth taking seriously: Uneaten live insects left in the enclosure can seriously harm the dragon.

One entry in that table deserves emphasis, because the reason behind it is specific and surprising: Wild hornworms are toxic to reptiles because they feed on tomato and tobacco plants and accumulate those toxins; only commercially raised hornworms are safe to feed.

Storage and colony notes
Superworms need slightly more care in storage than mealworms, and getting it wrong wastes money rather than harming your dragon.
They live at room temperature in a ventilated tub with bran or oats as bedding, plus a slice of vegetable for moisture. Refrigeration kills them, which separates them from mealworms and catches out keepers who assume the two behave alike.
Isolate a worm and it pupates into a beetle, which is why superworms are sold loose in numbers rather than as a breeding colony for casual keepers.
The practical point for feeding: whatever the bedding, the worms need proper gut loading before they go in, because bran alone is not a gut-load diet. Warning signs after a large feeder
Watch the droppings for the next couple of days. Reduced or absent droppings with loss of appetite and lethargy warrant veterinary evaluation; decreased stool production typically indicates reduced food intake or constipation.
