What the welfare and veterinary sources recommend
No single magic number exists, but the published minimums cluster tightly. Compare them side by side:

Read the spread correctly: PetMD's 40 gallons is a floor for survival, while the RSPCA figures describe an enclosure a dragon can actually use. Both RSPCA organizations state outright that bigger is better. If budget forces a choice between a larger enclosure and fancier decor, take the space every time.
Why body length sets the rule
The sizing logic starts with the animal. Adults reach roughly 45-60 cm (18-24 in) total length including tail: VCA 18-22 in (45-56 cm); PetMD up to 24 in (half being tail); RSPCA UK around 45 cm; RSPCA SA 30-50 cm, up to 60 cm; Australian Museum up to 55 cm; ADW 13-24 in.
That is why WSU's veterinary hospital publishes a proportional rule instead of a fixed box: Enclosure length should be at least 3x the lizard's total body length; VCA adds minimum width of 16 inches. Run the math on a full grown adult and the short starter tanks fail immediately, while the RSPCA minimum passes with little to spare. A dragon that cannot take a few unbroken strides, turn without folding its tail, and climb to a raised basking perch is living in a hallway, not a habitat.
Tank size for babies and juveniles
You do not need the adult enclosure on day one, but you will need it sooner than pet stores suggest. Juveniles can start in a minimum 20-gallon enclosure and need upgrading as they grow.
The cheaper path over a dragon's 7 to 15 years lifespan is often the adult enclosure from day one, furnished densely, since it skips the intermediate tank entirely. Whichever route you take, the full setup process is identical at every size.
Why length beats volume: the gradient problem
Gallons measure water, not usable reptile space. What a bearded dragon needs from its enclosure is horizontal distance, because distance is what makes a temperature gradient work. A hot-to-cool temperature gradient is mandatory so the dragon can thermoregulate within its preferred optimal temperature zone (POTZ)
The numbers make the point. The basking spot runs 95 to 110 F (35 to 43 C) while the cool end sits at 75 to 80 F (24 to 27 C). Stretch that fall across the full RSPCA length or more and the dragon gets a genuine choice of temperatures at every hour of the day. Compress it into a short tank and the whole floor plan reads as one warm blur, so the animal can never escape the heat or properly warm up. Height earns its place too. The vertical dimension leaves room for a raised basking perch at a safe distance from the lamp. Basking lamp must not be positioned too close to the lizard (RSPCA UK: back no closer than 25-30 cm from the lamp); basking area should be as large as the dragon so the whole body heats evenly; guard lamps to prevent burns.
Glass, wood, or PVC
The biggest tank in the store is not automatically the best one. The Merck Veterinary Manual weighs in on material: Bearded dragons do better in larger wooden or fiberglass vivaria rather than glass aquaria.
Solid sided enclosures hold heat with less wattage, and their front opening doors let you reach in from the side rather than swooping from above like a predator. Good ventilation is essential for air circulation, temperature control and humidity management. Glass still works on a budget; it just demands closer thermostat attention in a cold room.
What each size choice costs you in equipment
Tank size decisions ripple through the rest of the shopping list. A longer enclosure needs a heat source that can hold its basking zone without cooking the whole box: Heat the basking zone with a 60-100 W reflector bulb (RSPCA UK) or reptile-specific flood/spot lamp on a thermostat (RSPCA SA); ceramic (non-light-emitting) heaters maintain night temperature. Bigger boxes also demand attention to airflow, since stagnant corners defeat the climate you are building: Good ventilation is essential for air circulation, temperature control and humidity management.
Room placement scales with size too, because a large enclosure is harder to relocate once running: Position the vivarium away from other heat sources such as radiators or bright windows that could affect enclosure temperature. Pick the wall before you pick the tank, and the rest of the setup sequence goes smoothly.
One dragon per tank, whatever the size
A bigger enclosure does not make room for a second dragon. House bearded dragons individually: RSPCA SA states they 'can inflict severe damage to each other, resulting in loss of limbs and even death' and that keeping multiple females together 'is not a safe practice and is best to avoid'; RSPCA UK: 'it's best to house bearded dragons separately'. Signs the enclosure is too small
Dragons signal a cramped or under-furnished tank with behavior. Repeatedly running along the enclosure walls ('glass surfing') can indicate stress, boredom, or a desire to explore. Watch also for a dragon that never leaves the basking zone or never uses it: both patterns suggest the gradient has collapsed into a single temperature, which in a correctly heated tank usually means the run is too short.
Enrichment pressure rises as space falls. Provide sturdy basking furniture: large climbable rocks and secured low branches; RSPCA SA calls thick branches, rocks, hollows, basking sites and climbing facilities 'essential to minimise stress and provide choice for self-regulation and environmental enrichment'. Fitting that furniture plus two hides into anything under the minimum footprint leaves no open floor, which is its own argument for going larger.
The technical case for oversizing
Experienced keepers size beyond the minimum for one physiological reason: thermoregulation precision. Preferred optimal temperature zone (body temperature range) for bearded dragons: 25-32 C (77-90 F)
A lizard holds itself inside that zone by shuttling between microclimates through the day. More floor length means more intermediate temperatures between the 95 to 110 F (35 to 43 C) basking peak and the 75 to 80 F (24 to 27 C) cool retreat, so the dragon can fine tune body temperature instead of bouncing between two extremes. The species also uses vertical space in the wild: Young bearded dragons are semi-arboreal; adults are mostly terrestrial but remain excellent climbers and perch on elevated sites to bask. An enclosure with both a long run and a climbable third dimension lets a captive dragon express the full thermoregulatory playbook it evolved with, and that shows up in appetite, activity, and long term health.
