Where mealworms belong
Mealworms are a legitimate feeder insect. They appear on the standard list veterinary sources recommend: Commonly recommended feeder insects: commercial crickets, dubia roaches, black soldier fly larvae, hornworms, silkworms, mealworms, superworms, and waxworms.
What they are not is a staple. Two sourced characteristics keep them in the occasional column, and both are worth understanding rather than simply obeying.
Issue one: fat content
The first is straightforward and documented: Some feeder insects, such as mealworms, can be high in fat.
Fat matters in a captive lizard because captivity removes the reasons a wild dragon burns energy. There is no foraging distance, no predator pressure, and no seasonal scarcity. A feeder that a wild dragon would eat opportunistically becomes, in a tank, a food arriving on a reliable schedule.
Obesity in bearded dragons is not a cosmetic problem. It complicates every other health issue the animal can develop and it shortens life, which is covered in the lifespan guide.
The practical translation: mealworms as a treat within a varied feeder rotation, not as the default insect in the tub.
Issue two: size and impaction
The second issue is mechanical, and it is the one that actually sends dragons to a vet.
The rule veterinary sources set is precise: Never feed an insect whose length is greater/wider than the width of the dragon's head; RSPCA: live food greater than the width of the dragon's head should not be offered.
Stated another way: no larger than the space between its eyes
Mealworms come in sizes, and giant mealworms in particular are sold at lengths that exceed that rule for many dragons. A feeder that is too large is a documented risk: Small prey must be fed to baby bearded dragons to avoid health problems such as impaction; start with pinhead crickets and tiny, freshly molted worms and move gradually to larger sizes.

What about the chitin claim?
A very common warning says mealworms are dangerous to baby dragons because their chitin exoskeleton cannot be digested.
We checked, and none of the veterinary sources we cite makes that specific claim for bearded dragons. So we will not repeat it as established fact, because this site does not launder popular beliefs into citations.
What the sources do say points in a similar practical direction for babies, through the size mechanism rather than the chitin one: Small prey must be fed to baby bearded dragons to avoid health problems such as impaction; start with pinhead crickets and tiny, freshly molted worms and move gradually to larger sizes.
Freshly molted mealworms, which are pale and soft-bodied, are the version that comes closest to appropriate for very young dragons. For hatchlings, the sourced menu is different entirely: Dragons under 1 month old: flightless fruit flies, gut-loaded pinhead crickets, and mashed vegetables, fed 2-3 times daily.
The calcium problem all feeders share
Mealworms are not uniquely poor on minerals. Every feeder insect is: Feeder insects naturally contain extremely low calcium (about 0.03-0.3%) with 0.8-0.9% phosphorus; a 3-day 12% calcium gut-load raises insect calcium to roughly 0.8-0.9%, giving a Ca:P ratio of approximately 1.2:1.
That is the whole reason two preparation steps exist. First: Feeder insects should be gut-loaded (fed a high-calcium, nutrient-fortified diet) before feeding: NCSU recommends 24-72 hours prior; PetMD says 6-12 hours before; Merck describes a 3-day gut-load with a 12% calcium (calcium carbonate) diet.
Second, dusting: Lightly coating insects with calcium powder (shaking in a bag) can supplement calcium but 'is not a substitute for appropriate gut loading'.
And there is a timing detail that owners routinely miss: Gut-loaded feeder insects need to be eaten by the lizard within an hour of the insects being fed (gut-loaded)
The target this all serves: The calcium:phosphorus ratio of the diet should be at least 1:1, with 2:1 preferred (Merck); WSU and Illinois WEL state the ideal Ca:P ratio is 2:1. Dried mealworms and other forms
Dried or freeze-dried mealworms are sold widely and are a poor substitute. They carry no moisture, cannot be gut loaded, and do not move, which matters because movement triggers the feeding response in this species.
Canned or preserved worms have the same limitations. Live feeders that have been properly gut loaded are what the veterinary guidance describes, and anything else is a convenience product rather than a feeding plan.
Feeding practice
Offer mealworms in a smooth-sided dish so they cannot escape into the substrate. Count them out rather than pouring, since portion control matters for a fatty feeder.
Clear anything uneaten: Uneaten live insects left in the enclosure can seriously harm the dragon.
Frequency depends on age, and the whole schedule is covered in the feeding guide. Adults eat insects far less often than owners expect: Adult diet per NC State and WSU vet hospitals: 50-55% dark leafy greens, 20% chopped/grated vegetables, about 25% animal matter (insects), and a maximum of 5% fruit.
Feeding a mealworm-addicted dragon
Mealworms create a behavioural problem more often than a medical one, and it deserves a plan.
A dragon that has learned mealworms arrive daily will hold out for them, refusing greens and other feeders in the expectation that the good stuff is coming. Owners then worry the dragon is unwell, when the animal is simply negotiating.
The fix is unglamorous. Remove mealworms from the rotation for a couple of weeks and offer staple feeders alongside a normal salad. Healthy dragons do not starve themselves over a preference, and appetite returns.
The line to watch is where preference ends and illness begins. Appetite loss has documented causes beyond fussiness: Common causes of appetite loss include brumation (seasonal slowdown), improper enclosure temperature (a common reason dragons stop eating per WSU), stress, and illness such as metabolic bone disease, mouth rot, parasites, respiratory infection, impaction, or egg binding.
And a first rule of thumb from veterinary guidance: Leaving food after a meal can be one of the first signs of illness in a lizard, and not eating at all - even once - is a sign that cannot be ignored.
If refusal comes with weight loss, lethargy, or changed droppings, treat it as medical rather than behavioural and read the not eating guide.
Signs of a problem
After a large or oversized feeder, watch droppings. Reduced or absent droppings with loss of appetite and lethargy warrant veterinary evaluation; decreased stool production typically indicates reduced food intake or constipation.
