The verdict and the reason
Spinach is not toxic. It is limited, and the limitation is one of the better-documented facts in bearded dragon nutrition.
Swiss chard, spinach, and beet greens should be fed sparingly because they contain oxalates, which can bind calcium and other trace minerals and prevent their absorption.
That single sentence contains the whole answer. Spinach carries oxalates. Oxalates bind calcium into a form the animal cannot absorb. A dragon eating a spinach salad may be consuming calcium and still failing to use it.
Why calcium blocking matters so much in this species
Oxalate content would be a footnote in an animal with an easy calcium supply. In a bearded dragon it is not, because the diet is already fighting to reach its target.
The target itself: The calcium:phosphorus ratio of the diet should be at least 1:1, with 2:1 preferred (Merck); WSU and Illinois WEL state the ideal Ca:P ratio is 2:1.
The insect half of the diet starts a long way below it: Feeder insects naturally contain extremely low calcium (about 0.03-0.3%) with 0.8-0.9% phosphorus; a 3-day 12% calcium gut-load raises insect calcium to roughly 0.8-0.9%, giving a Ca:P ratio of approximately 1.2:1.
Gut loading and dusting exist to close that gap: Feeder insects should be gut-loaded (fed a high-calcium, nutrient-fortified diet) before feeding: NCSU recommends 24-72 hours prior; PetMD says 6-12 hours before; Merck describes a 3-day gut-load with a 12% calcium (calcium carbonate) diet.
And calcium-rich greens are meant to carry the remainder: Calcium-rich staple greens include collard greens, mustard greens, turnip greens, and dandelion greens.
Now add spinach. It occupies the space a staple green would have filled, and it interferes with the calcium arriving from every other source in the same meal. The effect is not additive, it is subtractive, which is what separates spinach from a merely low-value food like iceberg lettuce.

There is a second oxalate concern
Calcium binding is the reason most keepers know about. Veterinary guidance names another: Vegetables with a low oxalate content should be fed to decrease the likelihood of kidney stone formation.
Kidney stone formation is a slower and less visible risk than metabolic bone disease, and it is the reason the advice is framed as a general principle about low-oxalate vegetables rather than a warning about spinach alone.
The other greens in the same category
Spinach does not stand alone. The veterinary caution names three foods together, and owners who avoid spinach while feeding chard daily have missed the point.

A second, separate caution applies to a different group of greens for a completely different reason: Cabbage, kale, and mustard greens contain goitrogens that can interfere with iodine uptake and suppress thyroid function if fed in excess. What sparingly actually means
None of our cited sources publishes a gram figure or a frequency for spinach in bearded dragons, so we will not invent one. What the guidance supports is a clear practical position.
A few leaves mixed into a large salad of staple greens, occasionally, is consistent with sparingly. A spinach-based salad is not. Spinach as a regular weekly item is not either, because the interference effect works meal by meal rather than averaging out kindly across a month.
The simplest version: if you would struggle to explain why spinach is in the bowl instead of collard greens, leave it out. Nothing in the diet requires spinach.
What the plant portion should look like
The structure is documented: 80-90% of the plant material fed should be leafy green vegetables; fruit plus yellow/red/orange vegetables should be only 10-20% of the plant portion.
Most of the bowl is leafy greens, and those greens should be the calcium carriers. A smaller slice holds bright vegetables and fruit, which the vegetable guide and fruit guide cover.

Baby spinach, cooked spinach, and frozen spinach
Owners ask about these forms, and the answer is the same for all three.
Baby spinach is spinach harvested young. The oxalate concern applies.
A cook reduces oxalate content in human nutrition, but no veterinary source we cite recommends cooked greens for bearded dragons, and cooked leaves lose texture that raw greens provide. We do not recommend it as a workaround.
Frozen spinach is spinach, with the same profile plus a texture penalty. Fresh staple greens are simply the better answer in every case.
Age and risk
Juveniles are the group with most to lose here. Their skeletons are growing fast, their calcium demand is at its peak, and metabolic bone disease hits them hardest: Juvenile bearded dragons are particularly vulnerable to metabolic bone disease; young and reproducing animals face higher risk.
Their intake is also weighted differently: Live insects should make up about 70% of a juvenile bearded dragon's diet, with vegetables about 20-30% and only small amounts of fruit. If your dragon has been eating spinach regularly
Do not panic, and do change the routine. Switch the base of the salad to the named staples, keep the calcium dusting schedule accurate, and check that UVB is current, since calcium absorption depends on it.
Watch for the early signs that matter: Signs include weakness or difficulty walking, swollen or softened 'rubber' jaw, swollen or deformed limbs, muscle tremors or twitching, lethargy, loss of appetite, fractures, and seizures in advanced cases; RSPCA also lists permanently deformed limbs or spine.
Any of those warrants a reptile vet rather than a diet adjustment alone: Contact a veterinarian if a dragon shows weakness, tremors, or jaw/limb swelling; suspected MBD requires professional treatment and cannot be remedied at home.
